The cross breeding of 2 species is not being highlighted on this website as a way of promoting this practice for you to then go out and have a go at it (oblviously though this is your choice). I personally see no benefit in doing so at all but none the less this subject is another facet of and part of the complete story of the wonderful Java sparrow. It is most likely that the cross species breedings shown on this page occurred by accident in aviaries.

A hybrid is basically a bird that has two separate species as parents. The resulting young birds can present themselves with any combination of characters from the two different parent species, this may be that the resulting young may look either totally identical to or completely different to one or other of the parents. Usually each of the young hybrid show differing levels of characteristics between the two species in the pairing. Some hybrids can then go onto to produce fertile offspring of their own.

According to my research the Java sparrow has hybridised with a surprising number of other species, some similar and some not so. On this page I will detail the species and some will show photographs of the offspring of different Java to other species pairings. Below are a series of images showing the resulting young birds from known Java paired to other species. Other photographs show the recorded pairings in captivity, these pairing are by no means the only ones that have occurred but the only ones my limited research has highlighted.

All the pairings from the Java sparrow x African Silverbill pairing down are recorded in a 1958 book called 'Bird Hybrids, A Check-List with Bibliography by Annie P Gray' Some of the images below are linked to the websites where the images are taken from, hover your mouse over the images below and click to see the linked websites.
